IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa head men’s tennis coach Ross Wilson announced on Friday that Piotr Smietana has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Hawkeye program next fall.
“I’ve chosen the University of Iowa because the team atmosphere is just incredible,” said Smietana. “Coach Wilson and the guys on the team are motivating and it felt like home on my first visit. I believe studying and representing the University of Iowa will help me get better on the court and in the classroom.”
The native of Krakow, Poland, has an ITF World Junior Ranking of 275 and is a three-time Polish National Champion, winning the U14 title in 2010, U16 in 2014, and U18 in 2016. Smietana is a member of the Polish Davis Cup Team and was bronze medalist at the 2016 Polish Senior Championships.
Smietana has registered ITF singles tournament titles in Liepaja, Latvia (2015) and Corfu, Greece (2016). He also has posted ITF doubles tournament titles in Tirana, Albania (2013); Liepaja, Latvia (2015); Veli Losinj, Croatia (2015); Mostar, Bosnia/Herzegovina (2015).
Smietana joins Great Britain natives Joe Tyler and Will Davies and Minnesota native Nikita Snezhko as Iowa’s class of 2017.
