As part of the West Campus Tennis Recreation Center and Sports Activity Fields project, construction of the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex (HTRC) was completed in the summer of 2006 and the building officially opened July 31, 2006.

The complex is used by the Hawkeye men’s and women’s tennis, field hockey and soccer teams, as well as students and the public for general recreation. Along with eight indoor courts and 12 outdoor courts, the facility includes sports medicine facilities, team and public locker rooms, meeting rooms and video rooms. The building also houses Iowa tennis offices, a reception area and an Indoor Turf Area, utilized by the Hawkeye field hockey and soccer teams.

The facility hosted the 2008 Big Ten Men’s Tennis Championships and the 2010 Big Ten Women’s Tennis Championships. The HTRC will once again host the Big Ten Men’s Tennis Championships this spring in April, 2018.

In 2009, the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex received the Iowa Tennis Association Facility of the Year Award. In addition, it also received the USTA Missouri Valley Facility of the Year Award. The Missouri Valley is comprised of the states of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Iowa.

For the general public, there is Fitness West – a 2,700 square foot fitness area, the Indoor Turf Area for intramural and club sports teams and a 3,500 square foot Touch The Earth Outdoor Rental & Resource Center.
