Clemons, a defensive back from Piqua, Ohio, lettered three times (1969-71) for the Hawkeyes. He was named to Iowa’s first all-time team, as a defensive back, in a vote by Hawkeye fans in 1989. He still ranks 21st on Iowa’s all-time tackle charts with 261 career stops. He led the team in interceptions in both 1970 and 1971.

Clemons was named Iowa’s most valuable player in 1971, the same year he earned first-team all-America and first team all-Big Ten honors. He was also a team captain in 1971.

Clemons played in the 1971 Blue-Gray and Senior All-Star games and also the 1972 Tribune All-Star contest against the NFL champions. The Chicago Bears picked him in the first round of the 1972 NFL draft. He played with the Bears for six years (1972-77).
