THIS WEEK: The University of Iowa rowing team will travel to Rockford, IL, Sunday for the 18th annual Head of the Rock Regatta. The Rockford YMCA Rowing Club hosts the Regatta, which is held on the Rock River. Racing is scheduled to begin at 8:45 a.m.
THE COMPETITION: The Hawkeyes will be competing against several strong teams, including Wisconsin, Notre Dame and Minnesota. With only one remaining competition until the Head of the Charles, the world’s largest two-day rowing event, the Head of the Rock is the last chance for the Hawkeyes to practice and prepare.
LAST WEEK: The Hawkeyes dominated all varsity events at the Head of the Des Moines Regatta. The Iowa A boat caputured first place in the Varsity 8+ with a time of 17:50. The Iowa B boat came in fourth with a time of 18:30. In the Varsity 4+, the Iowa A boat, comprised of Lori Rehel, Megan Manijak, Lydia McGee, Michelle Trannel, and Kathleen Lehman, finished first with a time of 19:13. The varsity pair of Megan Manijak and Lydia McGee captured first place in the Varsity 2- with a time of 21:03.
HEAD COACH: Mandi Kowal is in her tenth year as head coach of the Hawkeyes. Her most recent accomplishments include leading Iowa to the NCAA Championship meet three of the past seven years. Kowal was a two-time rowing World Champion in the Women’s Lightweight Four without coxswain in 1986 and 1987. She was named “Female Athlete of the Year” in 1987 by the US Rowing Association and was inducted into the United States Rowing Hall of Fame in 1997.
NEXT COMPETITION: The Hawkeyes will travel to Boston, MA to compete at the Head of the Charles Regatta on October 18-19.
