Jamie Cavey, Mechanicsville, Iowa, a junior center on the University of Iowa women’s basketball team, has been added to the McLeodUSA StarHawks team this week.
Averaging 18.8 points and 12.7 rebounds per game and named to the all-Conference first team her senior year in high school, Cavey played in twenty games her freshman season at the UI in 2001-02 and finished with 51 points and 37 rebounds.
As a sophomore, Cavey played in all 33 games, finishing with 184 points, 98 rebounds and 25 assists. She was ranked first on the team in field goal percentage, scored in double figures in seven games, and set a school and Carver-Hawkeye Arena record for field goal percentage, going 9-9 (1.000) in Iowa’s WNIT Second Round win over Marquette.
Although the 2003-04 season is still young, Cavey has already made her presence known on the court, scoring in double figures in seven of the eight games played so far this year and averaging five rebounds per game.
“Jamie is one of those fun success stories, an Iowa girl made good,” says UI Head Coach Lisa Bluder. “She is a local athlete and it is always fun to see the local players develop and become impact Hawkeyes.
“She has improved dramatically during her career here at Iowa and is now a presence on the floor and demands the attention of not only one, but often two or three defenders.”

“She has improved dramatically during her career here at Iowa,” Bluder continued, “and is now a presence on the floor and demands the attention of not only one, but often two or three defenders.”
Majoring in math and secondary education and an Academic all-Big Ten student, Cavey also represents her team on the Iowa Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, a group of student-athletes from each of the UI’s varsity sports teams who help to shape departmental policies and procedures and to initiate department-wide outreach programs.
“Jamie is one of the funniest people on our team,” Bluder says. “She keeps things light all the time, but often when we need it the most. That kind of leadership quality is a real gift.”
The StarHawks program is an initiative funded in part by McLeodUSA, a leading telecommunications company with corporate headquarters in Cedar Rapids and a long-time member of the UI’s Partners in Excellence corporate sponsorship program. The StarHawks team is a collection of student-athletes at the University of Iowa who truly represent the very best the intercollegiate athletics program at the UI has to offer. StarHawks typically excel athletically and academically, and also are active in community or leadership activities.
