IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa women’s soccer team fought hard to earn a 1-1 draw against Michigan State in double overtime. Sophomore Lindsey Phillips recorded her first goal of the year in the 26th minute.

Phillips knocked in a header of a beautiful cross from junior Whitney Strain to put the Hawkeyes up 1-0. Iowa had a couple scoring chances in the first half, including one off a corner kick by Jamie Maltman. Avery Bang settled the ball off the kick and blasted a shot just high of the goal. Michigan State’s Emma Harris fired a shot in the 30th minute that glanced off the crossbar and goalkeeper Britta Vogele made the following save to preserve Iowa’s lead.

Adrienne Treado headed in a corner kick from Ashly Lawson in the 60th minute to bring the game to a 1-1 tie. Michigan State almost put the game winner in with 24 seconds left but Natalie Lencioni trapped the ball just before it crossed the line. The ball was cleared and just seconds afterwards, Sarah Stephenson blocked another shot at the goal line to send the game into overtime. Neither team could put in the golden goal and the game ended in a draw.

Britta Vogele had yet another strong showing, playing the entire 110 minutes and recording eight saves. The Hawkeyes tallied 11 shots on the night, six of which were on goal
