Considine a StarHawk

Oct. 1, 2004

Sean Considine, a defensive back on the University of Iowa football team from Byron, Illinois, has been added to the McLeodUSA StarHawks team.

One of five seniors selected to the team Leadership Council for the 2004 season, Considine was also one of three juniors selected to the Council in 2003. In addition, he has earned the Hustle Team award in 2001, 2002 and 2003–in ’01 and ’02 for special teams and in ’03 for defense–as well as the Coaches Appreciation Award in 2003. He was listed as first team free safety following spring practice. He has recorded four blocked punts in his career (two in 2003), with three of the four being recovered for Iowa touchdowns.

“Sean is a tremendous person with a great work ethic. He is just as dedicated in the classroom has he is on the football field. Sean is a leader any way you look at it, and we’re extremely pleased to have him on our team.”
UI Football Coach Kirk Ferentz

“Sean is one of the walk-ons we’ve been so lucky to get and who have developed so well for us,” said UI Head Coach Kirk Ferentz. “I was impressed with him from day one. He found a home at free safety his second year and is starting for us at that position again this year. He would have started before but for Pagel (Derek Pagel, who was drafted by the New York Jets of the NFL after his senior season in 2002).

“I think Sean is one of the most under-rated football players in the conference at his position,” continued Ferentz. In fact, he’s one of the best in the nation so far as I’m concerned.”

Not only has Considine been honored by his coaches and teammates, he has earned Academic all-Big Ten honors each year as well. He is majoring in marketing. “Sean is a tremendous person with a great work ethic,” Ferentz said. “He is just as dedicated in the classroom has he is on the football field. Sean is a leader any way you look at it, and we’re extremely pleased to have him on our team.”

The StarHawks program is an initiative funded in part by McLeodUSA, a leading telecommunications company with corporate headquarters in Cedar Rapids and a long-time member of the UI’s Partners in Excellence corporate sponsorship program. The StarHawks team is a collection of student-athletes at the University of Iowa who truly represent the very best the intercollegiate athletics program at the UI has to offer. StarHawks typically excel athletically and academically, and also are active in community or leadership activities.
