Hawkeyes Fight, But Fall to Illinois, 3-2

Champaign, IL – The University of Iowa women’s soccer team put up a valiant effort against the 16th ranked Illinois Fighting Illini on Sunday, but fell 3-2. Sophomore Lindsey Phillips and freshman Ashley Schlueter both found the back of the net for the Hawkeyes.

Illinois took the lead in the 23rd minute when Tara Hurless scored off a cross from Paula Faherty. Iowa scored the equalizer in the 28th minute when Lindsey Phillips scored her second goal of the season off a pass from Danielle Oswald. Ella Masar scored in the 38th minute to give the Illini the lead going into halftime, 2-1.

Illinois went ahead 3-1 in the 74th minute when Jessica Bayne scored off a corner kick from Hurless. Ashley Schlueter scored her first goal as a Hawkeye in the 89th minute off another Oswald assist, but the Hawkeyes could not find the equalizer.

Iowa recorded six shots on goal, two of which came from Oswald. Freshman Jamie Maltman and Susan Yagla also recorded shots on goal. Britta Vogele tallied 11 saves in 90 minutes of work for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa will travel to Chicago, IL to face Loyola-Chicago on Friday. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
