Lisa Bluder opened her first visit with the media for 2004-05 with a smile. “Just when you start gaining a little confidence,” she laughed. “One of your players walks in with her shorts on backwards.”

The Hawkeyes open their season 2004-05 season Nov. 19 against Southern Illinois in the first round of the 2004 KCRG TV9 Hawkeye Challenge.

Bluder added there are a few sure things…Jamie Cavey and Crystal Smith are two she’s counting on. Iowa’s veteran head coach is also counting on her freshmen to quickly climb the learning curve that comes with transition from high school to NCAA Division I basketball.

“Youth is not a time of life. It’s a state of mind,” she said. “I hope our freshmen forget they’re freshmen and take advantage of this opportunity because, obviously, four freshmen on a 10-person roster can have a very big impact.”

Despite her team’s youth and the loss of verteran point guard Lindsay Richards to a pre-season knee injury, Bluder does think a NCAA Tournament berth is within reach. “It’s an uphill battle every year. Do I think we can accomplish that? Absolutely,” she said.
