Did you know the UI Department of Intercollegiate Athletics pays the University for use of the parking lots around Kinnick Stadium and Carver-Hawkeye Arena on event days for our football and men’s basketball programs?
Or, did you know the Athletic Department will pay the UI the full value of the in-state and out-of-state tuition, room and board, and fees for all scholarships awarded annually to eligible male and female student-athletes — $7.3 million in 2004-05?
Or, did you know that the Athletic Department expects to pay more than $800,000 in 2004-05 to the University Police and other off-campus security staff for security and other similar services at the events we stage?
Most fans of the Hawkeyes and the intercollegiate athletics program don’t now these details of the operations of the intercollegiate athletics program at the UI. Quite honestly, we wouldn’t expect them to.
These represent only a small handful of the costs of doing business, the business of intercollegiate athletics at the highest level possible – as a member institution of the Big Ten Conference and the National Collegiate Athletics Association. We don’t hesitate to pay these expenses because we know they exist, we know they are our responsibility, and we know they come with the mission of providing the very best experience possible for the more than 650 talented student-athletes that participate in our program annually.
