Katelyn Quinn, a third-year member of the UI soccer team from Highland Ranch, Colorado, has been added to the McLeodUSA StarHawks team.
UI Head Coach Carla Baker used the following quote by Nathaniel Branden, Ph.D., as the best way to express her feelings about Quinn:
“Every life has its share of setbacks and disappointments–of tragedy and loss. How do we keep our inner fire alive? Two things, at minimum, are needed: an ability to appreciate the positives in our life–and a commitment to action.”
“Katelyn embodies the core values of our program. Those are commitment, integrity, toughness, honesty, collective responsibility, pride, love and leadership. We are fortunate for the blessings Katelyn brings to the team each day.”

That particular quote applies to Quinn as far as Baker is concerned because she had to be given a medical redshirt her freshman season but persevered in spite of that setback.
During her first season in 2002, Quinn started all 19 games and was named to the Big Ten all-Freshman team, the Great Lakes Region all-Freshman team and was named honorable mention freshman all-American by Soccer Buzz. She was also named Iowa’s Most Outstanding Offensive Player after leading the team in goals (11), assists (5), shots (63), and game-winning goals (5).
Quinn started 18-0f-19 games last season, missing one game due to injury. She was an all-Big Ten second team selection and was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for her play on November 3, 2003. Quinn also recorded her first hat trick and tallied an assist in a 4-0 win over Northern Iowa on October 31, while tying a school record for points in a game.
“Katelyn is an inspiration to her coaches and teammates,” said Baker. “Her work ethic and desire to be better every time she steps onto the playing field sets the standard for other student-athletes to follow. She is selfless in every aspect of the word, and completely dedicated to making this team better.”
Quinn, an academic all-Big Ten student, is a pre-business major.
“Katelyn embodies the core values of our program,” Baker said. “Those are commitment, integrity, toughness, honesty, collective responsibility, pride, love and leadership. We are fortunate for the blessings Katelyn brings to the team each day.”
The StarHawks program is an initiative funded in part by McLeodUSA, a leading telecommunications company with corporate headquarters in Cedar Rapids and a long-time member of the UI’s Partners in Excellence corporate sponsorship program. The StarHawks team is a collection of student-athletes at the University of Iowa who truly represent the very best the intercollegiate athletics program at the UI has to offer. StarHawks typically excel athletically and academically, and also are active in community or leadership activities.
