Purdue won the toss and elected to receive. Iowa had started on offense the previous 16 contests, dating back to last year’s game at Michigan State (9/27/03). The Hawkeyes have started on offense 63-of-70 contests under Coach Ferentz.
Today’s victory extended Iowa’s home winning streak to 17. The 17-game home winning streak, dating back to 2002, is a Kinnick Stadium record and is the fourth longest active streak in Division I-A. The win was also Iowa’s 12th straight conference victory at home, which is a school and Kinnick Stadium record. The previous overall conference winning streak record was 10, set from Nov. 9, 1918 to Oct. 20, 1923. In addition, Iowa has won 23 of its last 25 games in Iowa City.
Iowa has won five straight conference games. The 2004 Iowa Hawkeyes become only the sixth Iowa team to record at least five consecutive home victories (1984 – 5, 1987 -5, 1990 -5, 1991 – 7, 2002 – 8).
Iowa’s 23 points are the most points Purdue has allowed since Illinois recorded 30 on Sept. 25. Entering today Purdue boasted the 11th-best scoring defense in the nation.
QB Drew Tate completed 24-45 passes for 270 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Tate has thrown two touchdowns in three of the last four games (Penn State). The 45 pass attempts are a season high, besting his 39 pass attempts vs. Ohio State.
Iowa improves to 35-4 when leading at the half and 38-2 when leading after three quarters under Coach Ferentz.
Purdue failed to score on its first possession, becoming Iowa’s sixth opponent not to score any points on its opening drive. Illinois and Arizona State are the only opponents to score on its opening drive, as both posted touchdowns.
Iowa scored a touchdown on its opening possession snapping a three-game scoreless streak on its first drive of the game. The Hawkeyes have scored on their opening possession in five of nine contests.
WR Ed Hinkel caught a one-yard touchdown pass from QB Drew Tate on Iowa’s first drive of the game. The junior has caught at least one touchdown in consecutive games. Hinkel finished with six receptions for 38 yards and one score.
WR Clinton Solomon led Iowa receivers in receptions four of the last five games. Solomon caught eight passes for 76 yards. The native of Ft. Worth, TX, has 39 receptions and 567 receiving yards this season.
TE Scott Chandler caught a career-high four passes for 122 yards. All four receptions moved the chains and two came on third down.
DB Antwan Allen intercepted his fourth pass of the season, including one in three straight games. Allen intercepted Purdue QB Brandon Kirsch in the fourth quarter and returned the theft 19 yards. The junior has eight career picks.
Iowa’s special teams blocked two field goals and recovered a fumble on a muffed punt. Marcus Paschal blocked a Purdue 32-yard field goal attempt in the first quarter – Iowa’s first blocked field goal this season. Sean Considine blocked a 27-yard field goal attempt in the third quarter. Considine has blocked five career kicks (4 punts, 1 field goal). Iowa has blocked kicks in consecutive weeks. Miguel Merrick blocked an Illinois punt last week. The Hawkeyes have a total of four blocked kicks this season (2 punts, 2 field goals). True freshman Charles Godfrey recovered a Purdue muffed punt in the first quarter, the first fumble recovery of his career. Iowa has recovered an opposing fumble the last five games. The last game Iowa did not collect an opposing fumble was at Arizona State (9/18).
Today’s game was a sellout (70,397). Iowa has sold out its last 10 home games in Kinnick Stadium, which is a school record at the current capacity. In addition, every Hawkeye game this season has been sold out and the final home game vs. Wisconsin (Nov. 20) is also sold out.
PK Kyle Schlicher scored 11 points vs. Purdue. He converted 2-2 PATs and 3-6 field goals (22, 26, 34 yards). Today marked the first time this season that Schlicher converted three field goals in a game. The sophomore made two field goals three times prior to today (Kent State, Ohio State, Penn State). Schlicher made eight consecutive field goals before missing a 47-yarder in the third quarter. He also had a 31-yarder blocked and the 47-yard attempt hit the top of the upright and bounced away. Prior to today, his last missed field goal was vs. Iowa State in the second game of the season. He has converted 12-17 field goals (9-9, 20-39 yards) and 20-23 PATs this year. Schlicher is Iowa’s leading scorer with 57 points.
DL Jonathan Babineaux finished the game with five solo tackles, three sacks, forced one fumble and recovered one fumble. The three sacks are a career high for the senior. Babineaux has 35 tackles, 15.5 TFL and six sacks this season.
DL Tyler Luebke tallied a team-high eight tackles (6 solo), one sack, forced one fumble and recovered one fumble.
DE Matt Roth collected two tackles (1 solo), one sack and two QB hurries. Roth has 39 career TFLs, which ties him with Jim Johnson (1987-90) for third at Iowa.
LB George Lewis intercepted his first career pass late in the fourth quarter. He also finished with four tackles (3 solo).
RB Damian Sims attempted and completed the first pass of his career to QB Drew Tate for eight yards.
Iowa outscored Purdue 17-0 in the first quarter. The Hawkeyes have outscored their opponents 65-22 this season. Iowa’s 17 first quarter points are the most points scored by the Hawkeyes in any quarter this season. The previous high was 16 points scored in the third quarter last week at Illinois.
TE Tony Jackson caught a two-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, his second career scoring reception.
Iowa posted a 12-play, 94-yard scoring drive in the second half. The Hawkeyes started the possession on their own two-yard line and advanced to Purdue’s four. PK Kyle Schlicher connected on a 22-yard field goal.
Purdue’s 21 points are the most points Iowa has allowed since Michigan State tallied 16 on Oct. 2.
Iowa’s defense forced five Purdue turnovers and also blocked two field goal attempts. The Hawkeyes have collected five turnovers twice this season (Penn State).
Iowa held Purdue to 27 rushing attempts for 52 yards. Michigan State is Iowa’s only opponent this season to rush for over 100 yards (204).
