Pierce Lights It Up

The Gold team, paced by junior guard Pierre Pierce’s game-high 33 point performance, defeated the Black team, 69-62, in the 12th annual Black and Gold Basketball Blowout presented by Mediacom and staged Saturday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Steve Alford’s squad plays exhibition games on Nov. 10 and Nov. 14 before opening the regular season Nov. 18 against Western Illinois.

Pierce sank 14 of 29 field goal attempts in the annual exhibition, a total that included a pair of three-point attempts. He also grabbed seven rebounds, dished out seven assists and was credited with five steals. Erek Hansen added 13 points and 15 rebounds and Mike Henderson 11 points for the winners.

The Black team was paced by Carlton Reed’s 19 points. Jeff Horner (15 points), Doug Thomas (14) and Greg Brunner (12) each reached double-digits. Thomas led the team with 18 rebounds. Horner was also credited with eight assists.

Neither team shot from the field particularly well. The Gold team shot at a 43 percent clip; the Black squad at 34 percent.

Coach Steve Alford’s squad opens its 2004-05 exhibition season Wednesday with the 2004 Miracle Game versus Upper Iowa. Iowa plays Laval on Nov. 14 before opening its regular season against Western Illinos on Nov. 19.
