IOWA CITY – The National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced Tuesday that five University of Iowa field hockey players earned regional all-America honors. Seniors Sarah Dawson and Barb Weinberg were named to the first team, while senior Lauren Stiver, junior Debbie Birrell and sophomore Heather Schnepf were named to the second team.
Dawson, a forward from Berlin, NJ, scored a career-high 34 points off 12 goals and 10 assists. She led the team in all offensive categories and was a first team all-Big Ten selection this year.
Weinberg, a goalkeeper from Louisville, KY, earns first team regional all-America honors for the second-consecutive season. She was also a second team NFHCA all-American last year. Weinberg is a three-time first team all-Big Ten pick and had a .793 save percentage this year.
Stiver, a midfielder from Amherst, NY, is a four-time NFHCA West Region All-American, earning second team honors as a freshman, junior and senior and first team laurels as a sophomore. She scored a career high nine goals this season, six coming on penalty strokes.
Birrell, a midfielder from Frankfort, KY, earned regional all-America honors for the first time. She was second on the team with six assists and tied for second with 20 points.
Schnepf, a sweeper from Medford Lakes, NJ, also earns her first regional all-America honors. She missed the first five games this year while rehabbing a torn ACL suffered in spring practice. Iowa was 12-4 with her in the starting lineup.
“I am thrilled to have five Hawkeyes represented on the regional all-America teams,” Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum said. “Barb, Sarah, Lauren, Debbie, and Heather have done an excellent job on the field this season. Their effort and hard work have not gone unnoticed. These five athletes would not have been recognized if it were not for a total team effort this season.”
