IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa men’s track program has signed its first two athletes for the 2005 recruiting class. Head Coach Larry Wieczorek announced the signing of David Chaplin, of Stone Mountain, GA, and A.J. Curtis, of Brodhead, WI, to national letters of intent.
Chaplin helped his Redan High School team to the 2004 state title, running the sprint events. He is a National Elite Youth All-American, a 2004 Georgia Honor Roll member and a National Honor Society member. He was also one of Georgia’s nominees for the Wendy’s High School Heisman Trophy. His best times are 10.42 in the 100 meters and 21.25 in the 200 meters.
Curtis won the Division II state discus title for Brodhead High School with a personal-best 180-7, which ranks sixth among returning prep discus throwers in the nation. He was also state runner-up in the shot put with a throw of 59-7, which ranks 11th among returning prep shot putters in the nation.
“Both of these recruits are outstanding student athletes,” said Wieczorek. “They are also very versatile. David can run sprints from 100 to 400 meters and A.J. is an outstanding all-around thrower.”
