The Iowa men’s and women’s gymnastics teams competed in the Black & Gold Intrasquad meet, Saturday afternoon, in the North Gym. The meet featured the 2005 men’s and women’s squads who were recently rated eighth and 17th respectively in the GymInfo preseason poll. The squads were divided into two coed teams. The Gold Team swept the competition with a total of 333.6, while the Black Team finished with a 331.55. The women’s competition was judged by a panel of celebrity judges, including Iowa Athletic Director Bob Bowlsby, while the men were scored by NCAA-qualified judges.
Michael Reavis won two events, scoring a 9.35 on vault and a 9.3 on high bar, to place first. Michael McNamara won floor with a 9.35. On still rings, Kenny Lin scored a 9.45 to win the event. Matt Beiler and Linas Gaveika tied for the win on parallel bars, both scoring a 9.05
Sophomore Liz Grajewski and freshman Natalie Padilla scored perfect 10’s to be crowned co-champions on floor. Kortny Williamson also received a 10.00, on vault, to win the event. On bars, Romina Mazzoni took top honors with a 9.925. Danielle Legeai was crowned beam champion, scoring a 9.95.
The men gymnasts kick off the 2005 season on January 8, when they travel to Chicago, IL, for the Windy City Invitational. The women begin their season on January 8 at Florida for the Super Six Challenge, featuring nationally-ranked Georgia, Florida, Auburn, Arizona and Penn State.
