Some of the birds flew the coup last night and for a pair of good reasons – a portion of the proceeds of the Official 2005 Herky on Parade Auction will be going to the Johnson County Cultural Alliance and the Children’s Hospital of Iowa.

The 40 Herkys not available at last night’s auction are available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds to be directed to additional local charities.

The event, staged at the UI Athletics Hall of Fame, attracted a crowd in excess of 200. When the night was over, 28 of the 90 dressed-to-kill mascots of the University of Iowa’s intercollegiate athletics program first put on the streets of greater Iowa City and Coralville in celebration of Kinnick Stadium’s 75th anniversary had sold to bidders for $119,250.
Herkys will be traveling near and far – many of the winning bidders were local residents. However, two birds were sold via the world wide web with one of the winning online bidders checking in from Alexandra, Va.
“We are absolutely delighted first and foremost because it was a great evening for the charities who will benefit from the generosity of a good number of friends of the University , the Hawkeyes and art,” said Rick Klatt, associate athletics director for external affairs.
