Bowlsby: A New Year's Bang

Jan. 10, 2005

Happy New Year!

Yes. 2005 opened with a bang. A big how-about-that! Bang.

The Hawkeyes’ victory in the Capital One Bowl on New Year’s Day in Orlando capped a season filled with improbables and unbelieveables and can-you-top-that’s.

It also came fast on the heels of a December in which our two basketball programs emerged as teams to be reckoned with both on a Big Ten and national level, and our wrestling team registered a solid performance in the annual Midlands Championship.

It is my opinion that the performances of our student-athletes are a direct reflection of the leadership of the men and women who coach them, who mentor them, who guide them on a daily basis.

As I said on a number of different occasions while addressing groups of friends and fans of the University of Iowa and the Iowa Hawkeyes assembled in Orlando, we have invested significantly in the people in charge of our intercollegiate athletics programs because we believe strongly that high-quality, high-character people will be difference-makers for our student-athletes.
