Play Ball (in Cedar Rapids)!

March 22, 2005

The second annual Corridor Classic featuring the baseball teams from the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa will be staged Tuesday, April 26, at Veterans Memorial Stadium, home of the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.

Tickets cost $8 for box seats and $5 for lawn and bleacher seating. A $20 “Mezzanine” ticket is also available and provides the bearer all-you-can-eat/drink in that premium seating area.

“Our student-athletes and coaching staff are very excited about the opportunity to play an intrastate rivalry game in Cedar Rapids. Last year’s game was outstanding for our first attempt. Outstanding except for the final score, of course.”
UI Baseball Coach Jack Dahm

Tickets can be purchased by calling 1-800-IA-HAWKS or by visiting the UI Athletic Ticket Office in Caver-Hawkeye Arena. Tickets are also available at the Veterans Memorial Stadium Box Office or by calling (319) 896-7560.

Northern Iowa posted an 8-5 win in last year’s inaugural event. That game attracted more than 2,000 fans of the Hawkeyes, the Panthers and college baseball.

“Our student-athletes and coaching staff are very excited about the opportunity to play an intrastate rivalry game in Cedar Rapids. Last year’s game was outstanding for our first attempt. Outstanding except for the final score, of course,” Jack Dahm, Iowa’s second-year head coach, said with a smile.

“The venue is great, and each year we hope to make the Classic bigger and better than the year before. Eventually, we will be staging one of the premier collegiate sporting events in the state and the region.”

Dahm’s squad travels to Wichita State this weekend for three games against one of college baseball’s long-time powerhouses. The Hawkeyes open their 2005 home season and Big Ten Conference play Friday, Apr. 1, against Michigan State.

That game will be one of 12 night games scheduled at Duane Banks Field this season. The Hawkeyes and Spartans also play a pair of games on Apr. 2 before closing the weekend with a nine-inning affair on Sunday.
