A Surprise or Three

Aug. 19, 2005

Fans of the Iowa Hawkeyes can file this one under, “You Learn Something New Every Day.”

While touring Kinnick Stadium Friday, staff of hawkeyesports.com stumbled upon two rooms within the new south grandstand that they hadn’t noticed in the past. The first was the visiting coaches locker room and – no surprise here – it’s pink, too.

Later during the visit – this time on street level within the south grandstand’s concourse – we realized that there will be an Official Iowa Hawk Shop located inside the UI’s historic football facility. That’s the first “first” of the 2005 season for the Hawkeyes – the UI’s official souvenir shop has never had a permanent-surrounded-by-walls retail sales location inside Kinnick.

There was also one other significant find on Friday: There are a series of lights built into the floor of the south councourse immediately below the three arches that are the centerpiece of the south façade. Presumably, these will be lit at night and will no doubt add to the grandness of the new main entrance of historic Kinnick Stadium.

Other notes of interest from Friday’s visit: The Krause Family Plaza located just south of the facility is moving ahead at a very rapid pace, work on the new press box is moving ahead very, very nicely and, speaking of the press box, the “worst seat” in the outdoor club area – top row, last seat, furthest south – provides a breathtaking view of the playing field.

The “Big Clean” of the new south grandstand’s public spaces and field level spaces is also moving ahead very nicely as is the installation of the field level bleachers and a few other odds and ends….like the painting of handrails and the preparation of the concessions stands and the installation of the poles that will hold the new wrought iron entry gates in the southeast and southwest corners of the facility.
