Sept. 7, 2005

IOWA CITY, IA – Hawkeye sophomores Meghan Armstrong and Eric MacTaggart have earned the first Big Ten Cross Country Runner of the Week honors for the 2005 season. Both runners set Ashton Cross Country Course records with their winning times and led their respective squads to wins at the season-opening Hawkeye Open last week.

Armstrong, from Tualatin, OR, won the 3,000-meter race in a personal collegiate-best 10:25, which broke the previous course record of 10:27 set in 2004 by Hawkeye junior Shannon Stanley.

MacTaggart, from Glen Ellyn, IL, won the 6,000-meter race with a personal collegiate-best 18:18, which shattered the previous course record of 18:45 set in 2004 by Hawkeye senior Matt Esche.

It is the first time either Hawkeye has earned the weekly Big Ten honor.
