Hawkeyes Fall in Five

ARLINGTON, TX – The University of Iowa volleyball team was defeated by the Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans, 3-2 (30-25, 27-30, 32-30, 24-30, 12-15), Saturday in the UTA Invivational.

In game one, Iowa (6-2) struggled to find its rhythm initially, but kept the game close before three consecutive Melanie Meister kills gave the Hawkeyes a 16-15 lead. The Trojans managed to tie things up once again at 18-18, but Iowa began to pull away after that and Meister’s fourth kill of the game gave Iowa the 30-25 win.

The two teams traded points most of the way in game two. Arkansas-Little Rock tried to pull away with a 27-24 lead, but kills from Catherine Smale and Tiana Costanzo made it a one-point game and forced a Trojan timeout. Arkansas-Little Rock was able to re-group in the minute session, and eventually took the game 30-27.

Arkansas-Little Rock raced out to an early 10-3 lead in game three, but the Hawkeyes clawed their way back into the match, eventually taking a 26-25 lead and forcing a timeout. The two teams traded points the rest of the way, each fighting off a game point serve before Iowa took the game on back-to-back blocks.

Iowa jumped out to an early lead in game four, only to have the Trojans storm back to take a commanding lead down the stretch and win 30-24 – forcing the deciding game five.

In game five, Arkansas-Little Rock led most of the way. Iowa managed to fight off a pair of match point serves before an error ended the match at 15-12.

Iowa will battle Wake Forest tonight at 5 p.m.
