IOWA HEAD COACH Lisa Bluder
On first round loss to BYU:
“I am proud of our team. We had a lot of fight. Even when we were down 16 with eight minutes left, we continued to fight. When the big players fouled out, we had our opportunities. But BYU came up with some big plays. I can’t imagine not coaching seniors Crystal Smith, Ebone Pope, Tiffany Reedy and Morgan Kasperek.”
On the 3-Point Battle:
“It was a battle of three-pointers, and we lost big time. We had no three-pointers until the one minute mark. They shot really well. They did a good job taking away the three. Our offense didn’t have any flow.”
GUARD Crystal Smith
“I feel like we played a great game. We fought until the end, but we couldn’t get over the hump. But we don’t have anything to hang our heads about.”
On First Half Shooting:
“I think our first half shooting is what did us in. We had some great open shots, but they just didn’t fall.”
CENTER Megan Skouby
On combating BYU:
“You’re in the game, and you’re thinking about the next play. We gave a great effort, but it didn’t turn out how we wanted.”
On BYU’s 3-Point shooting:
“They had a lot of 3-pointers in that run in the second half, but we tried to keep going inside and t some stops on the other end. But those threes kept going in for them.”
BYU HEAD COACH JEFF JUDKINS
On The Game:
“It was a nice wins for us. Everybody contributed to the win. Iowa is a good team that is well coached, they will be good in the future. I don’t think there is anybody as quick as (Crystal) Smith in our league.
On fouling Iowa up three with 6.8 seconds to go:
“I’ve watched many games where the teams tie the game with a three and take the momentum into overtime. If they were going to beat us, they were going to do it the hard way by making a free throw, missing the second and getting the rebound. I told the team in the last timeout to pressure (their guards) and run the clock down, get into position and foul.”
On Iowa coming back down 16 with 8:33 to go:
“I give Iowa credit. It would have been nice to have our starting center in there (who fouled out). I told the team to be patient on offense and use the clock on defense. We have played tough games this season that helped us find a way to win.”
CENTER DANI KUBIK
On opening game plan that frustrated the Iowa offensive attack:
“In the beginning of the game, we came out with our defense. Coach talked in the locker room that they can score like 80 points a game, so we needed to defend well to keep them below their average, so I think defense was really key in this game.”
GUARD MELINDA JOHNSEN
On the impact of BYU’s three-point shooting:
“I think the three-point shot always has a big impact in the game. I think today a lot of the guards came out really strong. We’ve been playing somewhat timid lately and I think we all came out and showed a lot of confidence. Vanessa’s (Hutson) three’s coming off the bench was huge, and when we have that kind of bench power, it’s going to be tough to beat us.”
FORWARD AMBROSIA ANDERSON
On the match-up with Iowa’s Crystal Smith:
“You have to try to get in the post, but you can’t expect to have a mismatch right away. The key was getting couple baskets on (Smith) in the post and then (Iowa) switched to a bigger girl. It really just comes down to reading your defense.”
