The University of Iowa women’s tennis team has been selected to compete in its sixth NCAA Tournament. Iowa (18-5) will play Florida International (20-5) in the first round Friday, May 12 in Coral Gables, FL on the campus of the University of Miami.
Iowa made school history this season finishing with its best Big Ten season ever. Iowa went 9-1 against Big Ten opponents in regular season play. In the Big Ten tournament last weekend, Iowa dominated Illinois, 4-0, before falling to Michigan, 4-3.
The Hawkeyes are 2-5 in NCAA Tournament matches. Playing in its first NCAA Tournament in 1999, Iowa upset Florida State (5-4) and Notre Dame (5-4) to advance to its first ever NCAA Championships, where the Hawkeyes eventually fell to Duke in the “Sweet Sixteen.” The Hawkeyes lost to LSU (5-3) in 2000, North Carolina (4-1) in 2001, Notre Dame (4-1) in 2004 and 2005 (4-1).
First and second round competition will be conducted May 12-13 in 16 campus sites around the country. The winner of each site will advance to the Round of 16 beginning May 18 at Stanford University, who serves as the host for the remainder of the NCAA Tournament concluding with the championship match May 22.
