Former Hawkeye Passes Away in South Carolina

George Murphy, a four-year letterman (1986-89) as a placekicker on the Iowa football team, died of natural causes April 29 in Charleston, SC.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Rockbridge Presbyterian Church in Clinton, SC. A memorial will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 14 at the First Presbyterian Church in Hilton Head Island, SC.

Murphy is survived by a daughter, Audrey, his parents, Sally and Joseph Murphy, and two siblings, Joseph and Nancy. Murphy was a businessman in Charleston at the time of his death.

A native of Greenwood, SC, Murphy joined the Iowa program in 1985 and used his first season as a redshirt. He handled some kickoff duties as a freshman and sophomore. As a junior, he was 3-3 in field goals and 3-3 in PATs. He connected on 4-5 field goals and 23-24 PATs as a senior in 1989.
