CHAPEL HILL, NC – The twelfth-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team was defeated in its season opener, 6-0, by the Wake Forest Demon Deacons at the fifth annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge in Chapel Hill, NC.
No. 2 Wake Forest wasted no time finding the goal, with Kristi Harshman scoring the opener just 14 seconds into the game. She was assisted by Tracy Scott.
Iowa regrouped, and kept the score 1-0 until the Demon Deacons drew a penalty corner as time expired in the half. Lauren Crandall converted for her first of two goals on the day, sending Iowa into halftime down 2-0.
The second half was all Wake Forest, as the Deacs got goals from Crandall, Christine Suggs, Scott and Michell Kasold.
Iowa was out-shot 20-2 for the game, while Wake Forest out-cornered Iowa 6-0.
The Hawkeyes return to action tomorrow against North Carolina.
