IOWA CITY – The Setting
The University of Iowa women’s soccer team wraps up the 2006 regular season with a three-match homestand, starting Friday when they host Indiana at 7 p.m. Iowa entertains Purdue Sunday at 1 p.m. at the the Iowa Soccer Complex.

Late Goal Gives Spartans Edge
Michigan State’s Maureen Pawlak netted a goal in the 87th minute to give the Spartans a 1-0 win over Iowa last Sunday. Pawlak launched a shot from 25 yards out that found the left corner of the goal.

The Spartans outshot Iowa, 8-3 in the first half, but senior goalkeeper Ali Becker and the Hawkeye defense kept the match close.

Iowa came out firing to start the second half when sophomore Kelsey Shaw and freshman Alexandria Seydel both recorded shots on goal, but Michigan State goalkeeper Nicole Galas preserved the shutout.

Michigan Tops Iowa, 2-1
Sophomore Kelsey Shaw’s goal in the 78th minute was not enough as Michigan squeaked by Iowa, 2-1 last Friday. The Wolverines netted goals in the 36th and 74th minute for the win.

Shaw set the tempo early with a shot in the fifth minute, but Michigan’s Megan Tuura made the save.

Both teams created chances early in the second half, but Michigan was the first to capitalize with the 74th minute goal. Iowa responded when Shaw headed in a goal off a set piece cross from junior Melisa Kaetterhenry. Iowa could not find the late equalizer, recording just one shot in the final 12 minutes.

Scouting Indiana
The Indiana Hoosiers are 9-3-4 overall and 5-1-1 in Big Ten play.

Carrie DeFreece leads the Hoosier offense with 10 points (four goals, two assists). Lauren Lamping leads the team with five assists.

Stacey Van Boxmeer has played in 16 matches and has a 0.54 goals against average with 45 saves. She has allowed nine goals this season.

The Hoosiers are coached by Mick Lyon. Iowa trails the all-time series, 4-5-0.

Familiar Face at Indiana
Indiana’s assistant coach Ian Rickerby coached at Iowa from 1999-00. While at Iowa, Rickerby helped guide the Hawkeyes to a 13-7 record and a third place finish in the Big Ten.

Scouting Purdue
The Purdue Boilermakers are 12-3-2 overall and 5-2-0 in Big Ten action.

Parrissa Eyorokon leads the Boilermakers with 19 points (eight goals, three assists). Jessica Okorafo has five goals while Jill Sarbaugh has five assists.

Lauren Mason has started all 17 matches in goal and has a 0.66 goals-against average. She has 64 saves and has allowed 11 goals.

The Boilermakers are coached by Rob Klatte. The series is tied at 3-3-1.

Iron Hawkeyes
Eight Hawkeyes have started every match this season.

Those players include Stephanie Hyink, Kelsey Shaw, Melisa Kaetterhenry, Kelly Warner, Claire Goldenberg, Sarah Stephenson, Alexandria Seydel and Megan Love.

Season of Improvement
The Hawkeyes have made quite a few improvements during the 2006 season.

? Five wins are the most since 2002 season.
? Four shutouts are the most since 2002 season.
? Two-consecutive shutouts are the most since 2002 season.
? Four-match unbeaten streak in 2006 is second-longest in school history.
? The Hawkeyes collected their first win over a BCS school out of the Big Ten since 2003 (1-0 win vs. South Carolina).
