The University of Iowa field hockey team won their final game of the regular season 2-1, against No. 11 Louisville. Freshman Kelly Hondros and sophomore Lauren Pfeiffer scored goals for the Hawkeyes.

During the first period, Iowa out-shot Louisville 7-3 but were unable to notch a goal. Iowa was awarded a penalty corner in the 14th and 15th minute. Despite shots taken by Caitlin McCurdy and Pfeiffer the Louisville defense stood strong and denied both. During the 33rd minute, Louisville saw its opportunity to score slip away as the Hawkeye defense denied Louisville’s penalty corner. Heading into half-time both teams were scoreless.

Only four minutes into the second period, Hondros scored her first goal of the season as she broke away from the Louisville defense and had only the goalkeeper to beat, making the score 1-0. In the 48th minute the Hawkeyes were awarded another penalty corner. Pfeiffer took the assist from Sickel and slammed the ball past the Louisville defense giving the Hawkeyes a 2-0 advantage. During the 61st minute, the Cardinals were able to squeeze the ball past the Hawkeye defense making the score 2-1. With less than four minutes remaining in regulation, Hawkeye goalkeeper Munley stepped-up by denying two shots taken by senior Jessica Javelet, she has scored 18 goals this season.

Despite being out-shot 3-15 and out-cornered 2-9 during the second period, the Hawkeyes were able to hold Louisville to only one goal, giving Iowa the 2-1 victory.

Iowa returns to action on Friday at 11:30 a.m. (CT) against No. 16 Michigan at the Big Ten Tournament held in Ann Arbor, MI.
