The 2006 Alamo Bowl – the sixth consecutive bowl game for Coach Kirk Ferentz’s Iowa Hawkeyes – has reached sellout status for the first time in history, officials from the Alamo Bowl announced today.
A crowd of at least 65,685 will be in the Alamodome on Saturday, Dec. 30, when the Hawkeyes square off against Texas in the 14th annual Alamo Bowl. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. Iowa time. The game will be televised live by ESPN.
The Alamo Bowl showcases two of the premier conferences in the country, the Big 12 and Big Ten. The bowl has quickly become one of the most popular in the country, producing seven of the top 20 most-watched bowl games in ESPN history. The 2005 Alamo Bowl earned a 5.41 rating making it the most-watched college football game in ESPN history.
The 2006 Alamo Bowl marks the third appearance in San Antonio for the University of Iowa. The Hawkeyes are 2-1 in the Alamo Bowl, having beaten Texas Tech twice. This year’s game is the first Alamo Bowl appearance for the University of Texas.
The Alamo Bowl is the sixth consecutive bowl game for the Hawkeyes. It also marks the fifth straight post-season event in which Iowa will play before a sellout crowd. Fans of the Hawkeyes helped the 2003 FedEx Orange Bowl, the 2004 Outback Bowl, the 2005 Capital One Bowl and the 2006 Outback Bowl reach sellout status.
