UW-Green Bay improved its home record to a staggering 69-9 the last seven seasons with tonight’s victory over Iowa. The Phoenix led from start-to-finish tonight. UW-Green Bay has recorded two wins over Big Ten teams this year (Iowa and Minnesota).
UW-Green Bay held Iowa to a season-low 43 points tonight; its previous low was 59 in a 77-59 setback against Louisiana Tech. The 43 points are Iowa’s lowest scoring output since Head Coach Lisa Bluder’s second game at Iowa, a 66-42 defeat vs. Utah on November 19, 2000.
Iowa’s Jenee Graham pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds, including six offensive rebounds in the first stanza. Graham has grabbed 10 rebounds or more in 7-10 contests this season. Hawkeye point guard Kristi Smith netted a team-high 16 points, marking the third time she has led the team in scoring. Iowa sophomore Wendy Ausdemore tallied 10 points, marking the seventh time she has reached double figures this year.
Iowa sophomore Megan Skouby, who entered the game averaging a team-best 15.8 points, was held scoreless on 0-1 shooting from the field. Skouby played a career-low 21 minutes tonight.
With the game tied 10-10 at the 13:55 mark of the first half, UW-Green Bay finished the half on a 26-3 run. During that span, Iowa had an 8:35 scoring drought and scored its three points from the foul line. The Hawkeyes made only four first-half field goals, with their last at the 13:55 mark. Iowa’s 13 first-half points are a season-low. The previous low was 28 against Louisiana Tech on Nov. 21. The Hawkeyes missed their last 14 shots from the field in the first stanza.
Iowa did not make a field goal in a 16:03 span that covered both halves. The Hawkeyes opened the second stanza on a 21-9 run in 11:22 to shave the deficit to 11 (45-34) at the 8:38 mark. Trailing by 11 (52-41) with 5:02 remaining, UW-Green Bay closed the contest on a 15-2 run to win the game by a 24-point margin (67-43).
Iowa converted 15-19 (.789) from the free throw line, while UW-Green Bay was only 2-3 (.667) from the foul line tonight.
UW-Green Bay out-scored Iowa 27-12 in points off turnovers, including 17-0 in the first half.
