Northern Iowa’s victory tonight snapped a 10-game losing streak to Iowa. The Hawkeyes now lead the all-time series 10-2.
Northern Iowa drained a school-record and Carver-Hawkeye Arena record 14 triples tonight. The Panthers were red-hot from behind the arc, making 14-25 (.560). Northern Iowa made 7-11 (.636) from 3-point range in the second half. The Panthers had five players made two 3-pointers or more, including Traci Ollendieck making all four of her attempts.
Iowa had five players score double figures tonight, including sophomore Nicole VanderPol who equaled a career high with 10 points. Junior Krista VandeVenter scored a season-high 10 points in the losing effort.
Junior Jenee Graham recorded her second career double-double tonight. Graham netted a career-high 14 points on 6-9 shooting from the field and 2-2 from the foul line and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Iowa won the rebounding battle by 13, out-rebounding Northern Iowa 37-24. The Panthers had only 10 rebounds in the first half, including zero offensive rebounds.
Iowa continued its excellent free throw shooting, making 16-20 (.800). Northern Iowa was only 13-19 (.684) from the foul line.
Northern Iowa scored 27 points off 20 Hawkeye turnovers.
Iowa’s bench out-scored Northern Iowa’s reserves, 27-19. The Hawkeyes also owned the edge in bench points (27-19), second chance points (15-3) and points in the paint (28-16).
