Hawkeyes Defeat Minnesota

IOWA CITY, IA – 59th-ranked Iowa defeated 67th-ranked Minnesota, 5-2 in the first conference match of the season for both teams. Iowa claimed five singles matches and the doubles point in the win.

In doubles play, Iowa’s duo of Jacqueline Lee and Mili Veselinovic defeated Tijana Kiprivica and Ashley Schellhas, 8-2, while Merel Beelen and Hillary Mintz defeated Ida Malmberg and Danielle Mousseau, 8-4. Iowa’s third position doubles duo of Kayla Berry and Kelcie Klockenga were also successful in doubles. They defeated Karina Chiarelli and Lindsay Risebrough, 8-6.

In singles play, Lee, playing at the second position, defeated Kiprivica, 6-0, 6-0. Mintz was also successful today, defeating Risebrough, 6-1, 6-0, while Berry defeated Malmberg, 6-1, 6-2. Beelen won at the sixth position, defeating Chiarelli, 6-3, 6-1.

Veselinovic, playing at the number one singles spot today, was defeated by Schellhas, 7-5, 7-6. Klockenga’s match was a tiebreaker, and Mousseau of Minnesota won, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7).

“We played a very solid match today,” said Iowa Coach Daryl Greenan. “We had good energy and did not make many mistakes. It was a great win for us to begin the Big Ten schedule.”

Iowa returns to action March 13th at San Diego State, and March 15th at Long Beach State.
