THIS WEEK
The Iowa women’s tennis team will travel to Penn State, Friday and then compete at Michigan, Sunday. The Hawkeyes play four of their next five matches on the road.
THE HAWKEYES
Iowa is currently ranked 55th in the FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings with a 6-7 record, including 2-1 in the Big Ten. Competing for the Hawkeyes will be Jennifer Barnes, Merel Beelen, Kayla Berry, Kelcie Klockenga, Jacqueline Lee, Hillary Mintz and Mili Veselinovic.
THIS SEASON
Sophomore Merel Beelen is 11-2 and has won 16 of her last 18 matches. Mili Veselinovic has won 11 of her last 15 singles matches.
THE COMPETITION
Penn State is unranked with an 6-7 overall record, and 1-2 in Big Ten play. Iowa defeated Penn State in 2006 at University Park, 4-3, and has a 17-2 overall record against the Nittany Lions. Michigan is ranked 30th with an 8-5 overall record, including 2-1 in conference play. Senior Jenny Kuehn is ranked 69th in ITA singles rankings, while sophomore Chisako Sugiyama is ranked 87th. The Hawkeyes defeated the Wolverines last season at home, 5-2. Iowa has an 11-22 series record against Michigan.
LAST COMPETITION
Iowa hosted Indiana and Ohio State last weekend. Iowa lost to the Hoosiers, 5-2 before dominating the Buckeyes, 7-0. Beelen and Jacqueline Lee won both of their singles matches, and one of two doubles matches.
HEAD COACH Daryl Greenan
Coach Greenan is in his third season as head coach of the Hawkeyes. Greenan led the Hawkeyes to an 18-6 overall record in 2006, going 9-1 in Big Ten competition for a second place league finish. Greenan has a 32-16 overall record in two seasons at Iowa. Toni Neykova is the assistant coach and is in her fifth season with the Hawkeyes.
