VanDenend Earns Big Ten Honor

April 3, 2007

PARK RIDGE, IL –

Hawkeye senior distance runner Micah VanDenend has been named co-Big Ten Runner of the Week for his school record-shattering performance at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, CA, last weekend. He shared the weekly conference honor with Wisconsin sophomore sprinter James Groce.

The Glen Ellyn, IL, native broke his own 5,000-meter school record of 13:55.96 with a collegiate-best 13:49.31. VanDenend became the first Hawkeye in school history to break 13:50 in that event, and Iowa’s third student-athlete to qualify for the 2007 NCAA Midwest Regional. He is the first Hawkeye to earn the weekly conference honor since javelin thrower Bill Neumann in 2003.

The Hawkeyes’ next competition will be Saturday at the Mark Messersmith Invitational in Cedar Falls, IA. All events will be held at the University of Northern Iowa Messersmith Outdoor Track and Field Complex. Field events are set to start at 11 a.m. with running events at 1:10 p.m.
