Iowa heads to Wisconsin and Northwestern

THIS WEEK

The Iowa women’s tennis team will compete at Wisconsin, Saturday at 12 p.m. Competition will be held at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Iowa will then travel to Northwestern, Sunday. Competition will be held at the Combe Indoor Tennis Center, beginning at 11 a.m. The meets will be Iowa’s final regular season road matches.

THE HAWKEYES

Iowa is currently ranked 55th in the FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings with an 8-8 record, including 4-2 in the Big Ten. Competing for the Hawkeyes will be Jennifer Barnes, Merel Beelen, Kayla Berry, Kelcie Klockenga, Jacqueline Lee, Hillary Mintz and Mili Veselinovic.

THIS SEASON

Sophomore Merel Beelen is 14-2 and has won 19 of her last 21 matches. Mili Veselinovic has won 13 of her last 18 singles matches. Iowa’s doubles duos of Berry and Klockenga and Veselinovic/Lee are both 7-7 this season.

THE COMPETITION

Wisconsin is unranked with a 4-13 overall record and a 0-7 mark in Big Ten competition. Senior Caitlin Burke is ranked 23rd in singles rankings. Northwestern is ranked 11th with a 13-4 overall record, including 6-0 in the conference play. Sophomore Georgia Rose is 11th in singles play while freshman Samantha Murray is 29th and freshman Lauren Lui is 113th. Northwestern’s duo of Rose and Alexis Prousis is ranked 13th in doubles competition.

LAST COMPETITION

Iowa beat Michigan State last weekend 6-1, in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes won all but one doubles and one singles match in the competition.

HEAD COACH Daryl Greenan

Coach Greenan is in his third season as head coach of the Hawkeyes. Greenan led the Hawkeyes to an 18-6 overall record in 2006, going 9-1 in Big Ten competition for a second place league finish. Greenan has a 32-16 overall record in two seasons at Iowa. Toni Neykova is the assistant coach and is in her fifth season with the Hawkeyes.
