Hawkeyes Host Final Regular Season Matches

THIS WEEK

The Iowa women’s tennis team will play its final regular season matches this weekend, hosting Illinois Saturday and Purdue Sunday. Competition will begin at 11 a.m. each day at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. There is no charge for admission.

THE HAWKEYES

Iowa is currently ranked 57th in the FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings with a 9-9 record, including 5-3 in the Big Ten. Competing for the Hawkeyes will be Jennifer Barnes, Merel Beelen, Kayla Berry, Kelcie Klockenga, Jacqueline Lee, Hillary Mintz and Mili Veselinovic.

THIS SEASON

Sophomore Merel Beelen is 15-3 and has won 20 of her last 23 matches. Mili Veselinovic has won 15 of her last 20 singles matches. Iowa’s doubles duo of Berry and Klockenga is 8-8 this season.

THE COMPETITION

Illinois is unranked with an 5-13 record, including 1-6 in the Big Ten. Purdue is ranked 45th with an 11-7 overall record, including 4-4 in conference play. Purdue sophomore Mallory Voelker is 11-7 in spring competition, playing at number one singles. The Boilermakers’ Neela Vaez is 13-5, playing at the third and fourth singles spots.

LAST COMPETITION

Iowa traveled to Wisconsin and Northwestern last week. The Hawkeyes beat the Badgers, 4-3, before losing to the Wildcats, 5-2.

HEAD COACH Daryl Greenan

Coach Greenan is in his third season as head coach of the Hawkeyes. Greenan led the Hawkeyes to an 18-6 overall record in 2006, going 9-1 in Big Ten competition for a second place league finish. Greenan has a 32-16 overall record in two seasons at Iowa. Toni Neykova is the assistant coach and is in her fifth season with the Hawkeyes.
