Big Ten Network to Carry 21 Men's Basketball Games

Sept. 10, 2007

IOWA CITY — Eight of nine University of Iowa non-conference men’s basketball home games will be televised to a national cable audience on the new Big Ten Network.

The Big Ten released television information and starting times for the 2007-08 schedule Monday, with every home game of the 11 schools being televised for the first time in conference history. Overall, no fewer than 235 men’s basketball games will be featured on CBS, an ESPN platform or the Big Ten Network, beginning with exhibition play in late October.

Iowa’s Nov. 1 exhibition contest against Simpson College will also appear on the Big Ten Network. Coach Todd Lickliter and the Hawkeyes will open the regular season by hosting Idaho State on Friday, Nov. 9. Opponents and dates for the UI’s men’s schedule were released in August.

Along with the exhibition contest and nine non-conference games, as many as 16 Big Ten Conference games featuring the Hawkeyes will also air on the new network.

“I’m excited for the Todd Lickliter era to begin,” said UI Director of Athletics Gary Barta. “In addition to our in-state rivals, our schedule includes two additional Big Ten games, a home game against Wake Forest, and several other good match-ups. We’re fortunate to have strong television partners in CBS and ESPN. This year, we have the added excitement of the Big Ten Network. More than 20 Iowa men’s basketball games will be on the new network, making it critical we have distribution throughout the state for as many Hawkeye fans as possible.”

The only non-conference home game that will not appear on the Big Ten Network is the Nov. 26 contest against Wake Forest (6:05 p.m.). Iowa’s participation in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge will be televised on ESPN2.

Iowa’s contest against Bradley, Friday, Nov. 23 (6:35 p.m. CT) at the South Padre Invitational, will be televised on CSTV. FOX Sports will televise Iowa’s Dec. 5 contest at Northern Iowa (8:05 p.m.) and ESPNU will televise the Dec. 8 game at Iowa State (1:05 p.m.).

This season marks just the fourth time in school history the Hawkeyes will host as many as 18 games. Iowa played 19 home games in 1985 (16-3) and 18 in both 1995 (13-5) and 2003 (11-7). Iowa posted a 14-2 home record a year ago after winning all 17 home games in 2005-06. The Hawkeyes are 31-2 in Carver-Hawkeye Arena over the past two seasons, including a 15-1 mark in Big Ten games.
