This Week
The third-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team opens the Big Ten schedule against No. 12 Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI, Friday at 2 p.m. The Hawkeyes will then travel to Mt. Pleasant, MI, Sunday to play Central Michigan at 11 a.m. in a non-conference match-up. Both times listed are central.
Michigan (4-4)
The 12th-ranked Wolverines have the second-strongest schedule in the nation. Iowa will be the seventh top-ten team in Michigan’s first nine games this season. The Wolverines have recorded wins over two ranked teams, No. 9 Old Dominion (Sept. 7) and No. 16 Louisville (Sept. 14).
Lucia Belassi leads the team in goals (5), shots (24) and tied for the team lead in assists (5).
Last week, the Wolverines defeated No. 16 Louisville 3-2, and Vermont 5-0.
Last season, Iowa lost to Michigan on Grant Field, 2-1 in overtime, but was redeemed by defeating Michigan in Ann Arbor, 2-1 in overtime during the first round of the 2006 Big Ten Tournament.
Central Michigan (0-4)
The Chippawas have had a rough start to the 2007 season. Two of their four losses have came by only one point.
Pam Seufert and Moyra Betuzzi are tied for the team-lead in goals with two. Seufert has attempted only four shots with a shot percentage of .500, while Betuzzi has a shot percentage of 1.000 with only attempting two shots.
Central Michigan was idle last week.
What is Coming Up Coach?
“With another short week of preparation, we will be asking the team to bring a complete focus to practice.” Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum said. “It is vital that we make strides during the week and not just on the weekends. The attacking group has to finish goal scoring opportunities and our midfield and defense has to work on pressure situations both with and without the ball. We are excited to begin the second phase of our season.”
Last Week
The Hawkeyes were 2-0 last week, defeating Sacred Heart and Fairfield, earning Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum her 100th career win.
Iowa dominated Sacred Heart 6-0. Junior Roz Ellis scored two goals while Tricia Dean, Caitlin McCurdy, Lindsey Duffy and Katie Naughton each tallied one.
The Hawkeyes defeated Fairfield 3-1. Sophomore Jess Werley scored her first two career goals along with Ellis who recorded another.
What Griesbaum Thought
“It was nice to produce so many scoring opportunities.” Griesbaum said. “Now, we must do a much better job of finishing and turning the opportunities into goals.”
Individually Griesbaum said, “Roz (Ellis), Meg (Beamesderfer) and Tricia (Dean) had a great weekend.”
100 Wins For Griesbaum!!!
Iowa Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum earned her 100th win on Sunday at Fairfield. She currently has a career record of 100-76-3, including an 87-55 record at Iowa.
Beamesderfer Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week
Sophomore Meghan Beamesderfer was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week Monday. The defensive back helped the Hawkeyes to its fourth shutout and seventh win of the season.
The 2006 Big Ten Freshman of the Year has made several defensive stops this season. This is her first weekly honor of her career.
What Happened Last Time We Played Michigan?
The Hawkeyes and Wolverines last played during the first round of the 2006 Big Ten Tournament. Iowa won in overtime 2-1. Lauren Pfeiffer scored both Hawkeye goals, advancing Iowa to the second round of the tournament. The Hawkeyes continued to sneak past the opposition and earn the Big Ten Tournament championship as the No. 5 seed.

Iowa is at the top of three catagories in the Big Ten, shutouts (4), penalty corners (77) and wins (7).
Munley Among Nations Elite
Goalkeeper Lissa Munley has the 15thbest goal allowed average (1.28) in the nation.
Penalty Corner Awarded
The Hawkeyes are third in the nation with an average of 9.63 penalty corner’s awarded per game. Only Stanford and North Carolina rank ahead of Iowa.
Top Ten In NCAA
Iowa ranks in the top ten in five separate categories in the nation.
The Hawkeyes rank third in penalty corners awarded per game (9.63), sixth in shutouts per game (.500), seventh in winning scoring margin (2.14), eighth in goals per game (3.38) and scoring average (3.40).
Duffy, Top Of Big Ten
Junior Lindsey Duffy has recorded the most game-winning goals in the Big Ten with three.

Juniors Lauren Pfeiffer and Caitlin McCurdy have attempted the most and second-most shots in the Big Ten. Pfeiffer holds the top spot with 42 shots, while McCurdy is second with 31.
Munley Holds Big Ten Top Spot
Goalkeeper Lissa Munley is at the top of the Big Ten in two categories, shutouts (3) and shutouts per game (0.38). Munley has the second-best goals against average (1.28).
How `Bout Them Hawkeyes
The 2007 Hawkeyes have a record of 7-1, equaling Iowa’s best start under Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum.
Griesbaum led the Hawkeyes to a 7-1 start during the 2001 season. Iowa finished with an overall record of 13-5 and a 3-3 mark in the Big Ten.

Iowa has out-scored its opponents 27-10, out-shot them 149-74 and out-cornered them 77-41.
The Streak
Third-ranked Iowa is currently on a six-game winning streak. The Hawkeyes only loss was in the second game of the season to North Carolina. The Hawkeyes have the longest streak in the Big Ten, Michigan is second with a streak of two.
Ellis Has Five
Senior Roz Ellis has scored a team-high five goals this season. During her previous two seasons, Ellis recorded only one goal each season.

Juniors Lauren Pfeiffer, Katie Naughton and Lindsey Duffy each have scored four goals for the Hawkeyes.
Spread Out The Goals
The Hawkeyes have had 10 players (Lauren Pfeiffer, Caitlin McCurdy, Tricia Dean, Katie Naughton, Lindsey Duffy, Roz Ellis, Caroline Blaum, Adrienne Dybus, Kadi Sickel and Jess Werley) record goals this season. This equals the total amount of players to score during the entire 2006 season.
Second Half Is Prime Time
The Hawkeyes have scored a total of 27 goals to their opponents 10. Iowa equals its opponent in first half goals 9-9, but dominates them in the second half 18-1.
