THIS WEEK —The Iowa women’s tennis team heads to the Roberta Alison Invitational, Friday through Sunday in Tuscaloosa, AL. Competition will take place at the University of Alabama tennis facilities. Competing for the Hawkeyes this weekend will be Jennifer Barnes, Merel Beelen, Kayla Berry, Kelcie Klockenga, Lynne Poggensee-Wei, Mili Veselinovic, and Jessica Young.
THE HAWKEYES —The Hawkeyes will be joined this season by their three newest members: Alexis Dorr, Lynee Poggensee -Wei, and Jessia Young. As recruits the three student-athletes ranked in the top 65 nationally. In the 2007 spring season Mili Veselinovic was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week once. Merel Beelen (25-7), Jacqueline Lee (20-14), and Mili Veslinovic (27-9) finished the 2007 spring season with the three best singles records for the Hawkeyes. Lee, a senior, is ranked 108th nationally in the FILA pre-season rankings and was named to the 2007 All-Big Ten team.
THE COMPETITION–Iowa will face competition from Alabama, Auburn, Auburn-Montgomery, Belmont, Samford, Florida State, Mississippi State, Troy University, and UNC Charlotte. Florida State finished the 2007 season ranked 19th by the ITA.
LAST SEASON–The Hawkeyes ended the 2007spring season with a 7-3 Big Ten Record, earning the fourth seed in the Big Ten Championship.The Hawkeyes ended the season ranked 51st with an overall record of 12-10. Iowa defeated Ohio State (4-2) in the first round of the Big Ten Championships before falling to Northwestern (4-1) in the semifinals.
HEAD COACH DARYL GREENAN–Coach Daryl Greenan is in his fourth season as head coach of the Hawkeyes. Greenan led the Hawkeyes to a 12-10 overall record in 2007, going 7-3 in Big Ten competition for a fourth place league finish. Greenan was named 2006 Big Ten Coach of the Year. Greenan has a 44-26 overall record in three seasons at Iowa. Toni Neykova is the assistant coach and is in her sixth season with the Hawkeyes. She is a former member of the Hawkeye tennis team (1999-2002).
QUOTING GREENAN —“The tournament in Alabama is a terrific event. There will be some excellent competition and it will be a great test for our athletes. We have been working hard to prepare and I am looking forward to see how we compete.”
NEXT WEEK–Senior Jacqueline Lee and freshman teammate Alexis Dorr will travel to the ITA all-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, CA, Sept. 29-Oct. 7. Lee was ranked 108th nationally in pre-season rankings and posted a 10-9 singles record at No. 1 during the spring 2007 season. Dorr earned Player of the Year Award after winning the national championships at girl’s 18s last year.
