MADISON, WI – The University of Iowa men and women’s swimming teams traveled to Madison on Thursday to compete against the University of Wisconsin. The Iowa men were downed by the Badgers 175-125, while the women lost 197-102. This meet drops both squads’ records to 0-1 (0-1 Big Ten).
Senior Dragos Agache led the men’s team and took home two titles in the 100 breast (56.89) and 200 breast (2:09.72) as well as helping Iowa to a second place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:24.94). Freshman Conor Dwyer also had two first place finishes in the 200 free (1:41.14) and the 500 free (4:43.53) in addition to a third place finish in the 100 free (47.37) and helping Iowa to a third place finish in the 400 free relay (3:12.68).
The women were led by freshman Katarina Tour picking up the only two wins for the swimming team in the 100 breast (1:05.09) and 200 IM (2:07.41) as well as helping Iowa to a second place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:47.14) and a fourth place finish in the 200 breast (2:26.39).
In the absence of head diving coach Bob Rydze, who was at a conference preparing for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the Iowa Diving team, led by assistant Roberto Gutierrez, looked very good for the first meet of the season winning three of the four events. Sophomore Diedre Freeman won both the one meter (270.08) and three meter diving (273.30) for the women. Sophomore Frank Van Dijkhuizen won the three meter diving competition (328.35) while finishing second in the one meter diving (272.40).
After hearing the results coach Rydze commented, “this is a heck of a job this early in the year, I am very impressed, especially with Diedre [Freeman] who is only a sophomore, and has a real chance to be a national threat in a couple years.”
Next up for the Hawkeyes is a home meet with Minnesota on Friday, October 19 at the Field House Pool.
