IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa men and women’s swimming and diving teams hosted their home opener against Big Ten Conference foe Minnesota on Friday afternoon at the Field House Pool in Iowa City. Both squads fell to the Golden Gophers; the men by a score of 180.5 to 113.5 and the women by a score of 179-111, dropping both the men and women’s team records to 0-2 (0-2 Big Ten).

The Hawkeye diving team swept all four events after sophomore Frank Van Dijkhuizen claimed the one-meter (287.93) and three-meter titles (327.15), sophomore Deidre Freeman won the one-meter competition (253.20) and freshman Veronica Rydze (236.55) took home first place in the three-meter competition.

The lone swimming victory for the men came in the 200 breaststroke when sophomore Wil Whaley (1:51.68) edged Minnesota’s David Plummer in exciting fashion. Senior Dragos Agache took second place honors in the 100 (57.01) and 200 (2:09.68) breaststroke. Also adding second place finishes were freshman Conor Dwyer in the 100 freestyle (47.93), Brian Farris in the 500 freestyle (4:46.39), freshman Richard Salhus in the 100 butterfly (52.63), freshman Alex Dragon in the 200 IM (1:58.30), and Iowa’s 400 freestyle relay team of Richard Salhus, Conor Dwyer, Wil Whaley, and Brian Farris (3:08.10).

For the women, second place finishes were plentiful and found by freshman Kelsie Neubauer in the 200 freestyle (1:55.84), freshman Katarina Tour in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.38), sophomore Christine Kuczek in the 100 freestyle (53.14), junior Alison Gschwend in the 200 backstroke (2:06.04), sophomore Julie Feingold in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.95), junior Ashley Dell in the 500 freestyle (5:05.12), sophomore Laura Mozdzen in the 100 butterfly (58.03), freshman Kelsie Neubauer in the 200 IM (2:09.82), and Iowa’s 400 freestyle relay team of Alison Gschwend, Christine Kuczek, Katie Michelau, and Kelsie Neubauer (3:33.84).

With arguably the conference’s top two teams behind them, assistant swimming coach Frannie DeBord commented, “it was still an exciting meet, especially Wil Whaley’s victory in the 200 backstroke over NCAA qualifier and all-American David Plummer. We are learning to race against the best there is and we just need to keep plugging away.”

The Hawkeyes will return to action next Friday when the Michigan State Spartans come to Iowa City. The meet is scheduled to start at 5:00 in the Field House Pool.
