IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa soccer team put up a great effort against No. 8 Penn State on Friday night but was denied their shot at conference win number three, falling 1-0. Penn State senior Aubrey Aden-Buie scored the match’s lone goal as she headed in the ball off a corner kick during the final minute of the first period.
Despite the tough loss, Hawkeye Head Coach Ron Rainey thought his team played one of their best matches of the season.
“It was a great effort tonight by our players,” Rainey said. “Penn State is an awesome team and I thought we gave them a real good effort. I look forward to seeing us come out with this same intensity on Sunday.”
The Hawkeyes had two big scoring chances late in the second period but were denied by Penn State’s stingy defense. Freshman Amanda Martin broke away from a Penn State defender in the 74th minute but Penn State goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher made a great diving stop to her right to block the shot. With under a minute remaining, junior Kelsey Shaw’s header off a corner kick sailed just high and wide of the goal.
Freshman Kali Feiereisel was thrust into action during the 26th minute when senior goalkeeper Lindsey Boldt was injured. The Libertyville, IL, native has played admirably recently while facing the conference’s three top teams.
The Hawkeyes return to action Sunday at the UI Soccer Complex for their final home match of the season against Ohio State. It is also Senior Day, where the Hawkeyes will thank nine players for their time and dedication to Iowa soccer. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
