IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa soccer team defeated Ohio State 1-0 on Sunday, giving the Hawkeyes their first overtime win of the season. Coming into Sunday’s match, which was Senior Day at the UI Soccer Complex, the Hawkeyes were 0-2-4 in overtime games this season, including a pair of heartbreaking losses last weekend.
Senior Sarah Stephenson, who was among nine Hawkeyes playing the final home game of their careers, scored the game-winning goal in the 100th minute. The Middleton, WI, native took the ball into the middle of the field and her shot just got by Ohio State keeper Lauren Robertson after a hectic struggle inside the goal box.
“It was a great team effort this weekend,” Head Coach Ron Rainey said. “I’m so proud of our seniors for coming out and playing like they did. This is a big win for us.”
Freshman goalkeeper Kali Feiereisel played a tremendous game in goal, securing five saves. On an afternoon where strong winds were frequent, physical defense reigned supreme. Three yellow cards were given in the match, as well as 29 total fouls.
The victory over the Buckeyes marks a few milestones for the Hawkeyes. Iowa (7-5-4, 3-4-0) gained their third conference win of the season, which is the most since 2002. The win is also the first win over Ohio State (10-7-0) since a 3-1 victory in 2002. The Hawkeyes finished with a 5-2-1 record at the UI Soccer Complex.
With three matches left, the Hawkeyes will finish the season on the road. First up is a visit with the Wisconsin Badgers this Friday at 7 p.m. in Madison. Iowa will then make its Big Ten Network debut next Sunday against Northwestern in Evanston.
