IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa men and women’s swimming and diving teams hosted the Michigan State Spartans on Friday at the Field House Pool in Iowa City. Both squads came away with victories, the women won by a score of 178-122 while the men pulled out a 150.5-149.5 victory. Needing a second place finish to win the meet heading into the 400 freestyle relay, Hawkeye sophomore Brian Farris came from behind in the final leg to pull out a tie and give Iowa the one point victory in front of a raucous Field House crowd. The victories raise both teams’ records to 1-2 (1-2 Big Ten).

Fresh off of his Big Ten diver of the Week honor, sophomore Frank Van Dijkhuizen won both the one-meter (290.48) and three-meter (335.85) to help the Iowa diving team gain a 30-8 advantage over Michigan State’s. Iowa’s Deidre Freeman turned in a second place finish on the one-meter board (277.13) and a third place finish on the three-meter board (249.90).

The men’s swimming team picked up five individual first place finishes as well as one relay victory as the team of Max Dittmer, Dragos Agache, Nathan Keeling, and Richard Salhus took home the 200 Medley Relay title. Sophomore Wil Whaley led the Hawkeyes with two individual wins in the 100 (52.43) and 200 (1:53.64) backstroke. Senior Dragos Agache gathered first place honors in the 100 breaststroke (56.78) followed up by second place finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:06.28). Other first place finishers on the evening were sophomore Brian Farris in the 500 freestyle and freshman Conor Dwyer in the 100 freestyle (46.92), who also notched a second place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:41.56).

The Hawkeye women surrendered just one victory to the Spartan swimmers and took 13 for themselves. Winning two individual titles apiece were junior Alison Gschwend in the 100 (57.90) and 200 backstroke (2:04.25), sophomore Christine Kuczek in the 100 (52.73) and 200 freestyle (1:54.03), freshman Katarina Tour in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.13) and 200 IM (2:08.00), and sophomore Margie Chamberlin in the 100 (57.46) and 200 butterfly (2:05.29). Other swimmers with first place performances were junior Ashley Dell in the 1,000 freestyle (10:14.21), sophomore Julie deBruin in the 50 freestyle (24.28), and sophomore Julie Feingold in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.55).

After the team’s first win of the season coach Marc Long commented, “This was a great win for both teams. It is just another step towards getting ready for our meets later in February and March. Even though tonight was a step forward, we are still going to be in the pool at 6:30 tomorrow morning practicing.”
