March 3, 2008

IOWA CITY – – The Big Ten announced today that Iowa senior Johanna Solverson has been named co-Player of the Week with Ohio State’s Jantel Lavender.

Solverson takes home her second career weekly honor and her second of the season after helping Iowa clinch a share of the Big Ten Conference title.

Against Northwestern on Thursday, Solverson netted 13 points on .500 (6-of-12) shooting with six assists, four rebounds and three steals. On Sunday at Wisconsin, the senior scored a career-high 31 points on a career-high 12 field goals, adding three boards, two assists and one steal as the Hawkeyes clinched their first Big Ten title since 1998. On the week, Solverson averaged 22 points, 3.5 rebounds, four assists and two steals while shooting .563 from the field and .455 from beyond the arc.

The native of Lake Zurich, IL, made nine of her first 10 field goal attempts against the Badgers. She netted 23 first-half points on 10-12 shooting from the field and 3-4 from long distance. The 23 points are the second-most ever by a Hawkeye in a half (28 by Crystal Smith at Louisiana Tech in 2005). Solverson helped the Black and Gold shoot 73.9 percent (17-of-23) from the field in the first half, which is a school record for field goal percentage in a half.

Iowa (20-9, 13-5) is the No. 2 seed at this weekend’s Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament. The Hawkeyes will face either seventh-seeded Michigan (16-12, 9-9) or No. 10 Penn State (13-17, 4-14) Friday at 10:30 a.m. (CDT) at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, IN.
