IOWA CITY – Freshman Chelsey Carmody tied two school records as Iowa downed Utah Valley, 11-1, in five innings Sunday at the Amy S. Harrison Classic. The Hawkeyes allowed only one hit en route to their 14th victory of the season.
Carmody tied the school record for triples in a single game with two and runs scored in a single game with four.
The Hawkeyes put together an impressive all-around weekend. Iowa’s pitching staff allowed just one run on only five hits and struck out 36 batters to just three walks. Iowa’s offense outscored its opponents, 32-1, collecting 32 hits including 13 extra base hits. Four Hawkeyes hit home runs and the team finished the four-game weekend with a .578 slugging percentage.
Iowa scored in its first at-bat to take a 1-0 lead. Carmody started the game with a triple to the left field fence and scored when sophomore Lindsey Digmann’s bunt was mishandled by the Utah Valley pitcher.
The Hawkeyes tacked on five more runs in the second inning for a 6-1 advantage. Senior Emily Nichols walked and moved to second on an infield single by junior Rachel West. Carmody cleared the bases with her second triple in as many innings to make the score 3-1. Digmann then slapped a ball to the left side of the infield and the throw was dropped at first, allowing Carmody to score. Junior Colleen McGlaughlin followed with her second home run of the weekend, this time a two-run shot to right-center field for the final runs of the frame.
Sophomore Katie Brown and West teamed up for Iowa’s seventh run of the contest in the third inning. Brown dropped a two-out double on the right field line and scored on a slap-single to right by West.
Three more Hawkeye runs in the fourth gave Iowa a commanding 10-1 lead. Carmody singled and moved to second on a Utah Valley error, then hustled to third on a groundout. She scored on an RBI single by McGlaughlin for an 8-1 lead. Junior Callie Adreon took McGlaughlin’s place at first and slid into second on a wild pitch. After an Erin Riemersma single, Adreon scored on another wild pitch, followed by an RBI double by senior Summer Downs.
Iowa scored its final run of the game in the fifth inning. Carmody reached on an error before freshman Jenny Schuelke singled. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Carmody scored on an RBI groundout by Riemersma.
Carmody finished 3-4 with two triples, two RBI and four runs scored. McGlaughlin went 2-3 with a home run and three RBI while West finished 3-3.
Junior Brittany Weil threw three innings for the win, allowing one run on only one hit and striking out four. Sophomore Amanda Zust tossed two innings of relief and struck out two with no hits or walks.
Iowa will travel to DeLand FL, next weekend to compete in the Stetson Spring Classic. The Hawkeyes will open the Classic Friday against Elon at 1 p.m. central time.
