Veselinovic Upsets 5th In The Country

April 12, 2008

IOWA CITY, IA — The Iowa Women’s tennis team showed their true caliber this afternoon, battling the top-ranked team in the nation match by match. The No. 47 Hawkeyes were defeated by No. 1 Northwestern 6-1, but Iowa ended the match with an upset that overshadowed the loss. Senior Mili Veselinovic, Iowa’s leader in singles play, upset Georgia Rose, the fifth ranked player in the nation, to end the match. The Hawkeyes are now 11-7, 2-5 in Big Ten play.

Iowa went 0-3 in doubles competition today, losing the doubles point to the Wildcats. Jacqueline Lee and Alexis Dorr were defeated by the 14th-ranked doubles duo of Rose and Lauren Lui 8-1. The remaining two doubles matches were a close battle until the end. Mili Veselinovic and Kelcie Klockenga, a fairly new pairing for the Hawkeyes, were defeated 8-5 in a tough match against Samantha Murray and Suzie Matzenauer. To conclude doubles play, Kayla Berry and Lynne Poggensee-Wei fell to Alexis Conill and Maria Mosolova 8-5 after an intense match.

Opening singles competition, the Hawkeyes dropped matches at the fourth, fifth, and six positions to decide the final match score. However, the real excitement of the match was only beginning as Iowa gave Northwestern’s top three ranked players a run for their money at the one, two, and three spots.

Dorr nearly pulled off the upset over 25th-ranked Murray, winning the first set 7-5. Dropping the second set 6-1, the match went to a tough tie-breaker and Dorr was defeated 5-7, 6-1, 10-5. Lee, facing third-ranked Mosolova at the number one position, started the match off strong, taking the first set 6-2. After a 2-6 loss in the second set, Lee’s match came down to the tie-breaking set as well. Lee fell to 3rd-ranked Mosolova in the tie-breaker 2-6, 6-2, 10-3.

Down to the last singles match of the day, the Hawkeyes were looking for their only singles point from Veselinovic. Earning possibly one of the biggest wins in her career, Veselinovic delivered a huge upset with her 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) victory over Rose, the fifth-ranked player in the country. Veselinovic is now 23-5 in singles play this season.

“I’m impressed with our overall energy today,” said Iowa Head Coach Daryl Greenan. “We came out and had our chance in doubles. It was an incredible performance, especially at the one, two, and three spots where we came so close to taking down three of the top 25 players in the country. The effort was highlighted by a huge win for Mili (Veselinovic) over the fifth-ranked player in the country. Yesterday we talked about playing the rest of the season with that kind of energy and if we can keep that up we are in good shape.”

Iowa will host Wisconsin tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. Competition will take place at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. Tomorrow’s match will be the Hawkeyes final home match this season.
