2008 Hall of Fame Class Announced

IOWA CITY, IA – Today, the National Iowa Varsity Club and the University of Iowa Athletic Department has announced the names of six individuals who have been selected as the 2008 Hall of Fame Class. It’s the Hawkeyes’ 20th Hall of Fame Class. Five former University of Iowa student-athletes and one former coach will be inducted into the National Iowa Varsity Club Athletics Hall of Fame on August 30, 2008 (Iowa versus Maine football game day).

Gary Morris (Swimming 1957-59), Kay Stormo (Cross Country 1978-81 and Track 1979-82), Marv Cook (Football 1985-88), Lincoln McIlravy (Wrestling 1993-95, 1997), Andrea Wieland (Field Hockey 1987-88, 1990, 1992) and Tom Davis (Basketball Coach 1987-1999) represent Iowa’s newest class of Hall of Fame inductees.

These six inductees were selected by a vote of all dues-paying members of the National Iowa Varsity Club. All former Hawkeye athletes who have won at least one major letter are eligible for the Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame. Athletes must have completed their eligibility at least ten years and coaches/administrators at least five years prior to their selection.

The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony banquet/dinner will be held on August 30, 2008 in the Coralville Marriott Hotel and Convention Center – Coral Ballroom at 6:30 p.m., preceded by a reception at 5:30 p.m. The Induction banquet/dinner is open to the public. Heritage Era – Athletes

Gary Morris – An accomplished swimmer, Gary won a NCAA Championship in the 50 meter freestyle in 1958 and set an America collegiate record of 22.0 seconds in 1959. He was a seven time All-American in the 50 and 100 meter freestyles and 200 meter individual medley and a three time Big Ten Champion (50 meter freestyle in 1958, 59 and 200 individual medley in 1957). He also qualified for the finals of the 1956 Olympic Trials in the 100 meter freestyle.

Kay Stormo – Kay had a very distinguished career at Iowa and currently holds the Iowa school record in the indoor 800 meter run with a time of 2:05.67. She was the NCAA Runner-up in the outdoor 800 meter run in 1982; a three time All-American (880 yard – indoor, 800 meter – outdoor, and Distance Medley Relay); and a three-time Big Ten Champion (600 meters and 3,200 meter relay – indoor in 1979; and 800 yards indoor in 1980 and 1982).

Modern Era – Athletes

Marv Cook – While at Iowa, Marv became a first-team consensus All-American in 1988; honorable mention All-American in 1987; two time First Team All-Big Ten; two time Iowa team MVP, named to Iowa’s all-time team and was academic All-Conference. He is the all-time leading receiver among tight-ends at Iowa. In 1987, his 28-yard reception with six seconds left keyed Iowa’s first win at Ohio State since 1959. In 1989 he was a third round draft pick by the New England Patriots, where he went on to be a two time All-Pro selection.

Lincoln McIlravy – Lincoln was a three-time NCAA Wrestling Champion and finished runner-up in his junior year; a four time All-American; and a three time Big-Ten Champion. He was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 1993 and in 1997 was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the NCAA Championship. In 2000, he was a bronze medalist at the Sydney Olympic Games. He currently is tied with twelve other Hawkeyes for best season winning percentage and is second in career winning percentage at 96-3-0 (.970). He was a member of four Big-Ten Championship teams and three NCAA Championships teams.

Andrea Wieland – Andrea’s legacy at Iowa includes being a two time First Team All-American, two-time NCAA All-Tournament team member, three-time First Team All-Region, two-time First Team All Big Ten, three-time All Academic Big Ten and a finalist for the Honda Broderick Sports Award (Field Hockey’s equivalent of the Heisman Award). In 1992, she was a finalist for the NCAA Woman of the Year and was awarded the Big Ten Medal of Honor. During her tenure she led the team in saves each year and made four appearances in the NCAA Final Four along with two National Runner-Up teams. She was on the US National Team from 1991 to 1993 and 1995 to 1996. In 1996 she was a member of the US Olympic Team.

Coach

Tom Davis – Tom is the only coach in history to receive both the Big Ten Coach of the Year and the AP National Coach of the Year Award in his first season. During his first year at Iowa, his team was the first team in Iowa history to attain the # 1 ranking in the AP poll, holds the school season win record with 30 wins, and made it to the Elite 8 in the NCAA tournament. His final season in 1998-99, his team ranked as high as #15 in the AP National Poll and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. His teams reached the NCAA tournament nine times and twice qualified for the NIT Tournament during his thirteen years at Iowa. Also during his tenure, he had ten 20 win seasons; 13 players drafted in the NBA; reached 500 career wins; and finished with a 269-140 record.
