Community Heroes Nomination Form

IOWA CITY – The UI Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, Gazette Communications, the Hawkeye Radio Network, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and National Electrical Contractors Association have teamed up to celebrate the spirit of Iowa and Iowans by offering victims of the natural disasters that ripped apart portions of the state of Iowa this spring and the community heroes that responded to the needs of their neighbors complimentary tickets to the first two home games of the 2008 season for the UI football team.

The joint effort is designed to provide disaster victims the opportunity to take a break from their recovery efforts and to honor the hundreds if not thousands of Iowans who offered a helping hand during the days and weeks immediately before and after the natural disasters that rocked the state in May and June.

“The spirit of Iowa and Iowans was on full display during those days and weeks in May and June, and it continues to be today in places like Parkersburg, Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids, Coralville, Iowa City , Oakville and many, many more where Iowans continue to provide much-needed support to friends and neighbors in need,” said Gary Barta, the UI’s director of athletics.

“Our goal is to lift the spirits and provide a day of diversion and, perhaps, normalcy for those who have been personally affected by the devastation and to salute those who provided or, in many cases, continue to provide assistance.”

“This is a very difficult time for many, many Iowans and, at the same time, we see on a daily basis just how special Iowa and Iowans are. We share in the hope that an afternoon at Kinnick Stadium might provide the victims with a diversion and the `heroes’ a sense of Iowa’s appreciation for their community spirit,” said John Phalen, vice president and general manager of KCRG-TV9.

DISASTER VICTIM TICKET PROGRAM

The UI Athletics Department will provide two (2) game tickets to either the Iowa vs. Maine (Aug. 30) or the Iowa vs. Florida International (Sept. 6) college football game to be played at historic Kinnick Stadium to individuals who provide the UI Athletics Ticket Office with a copy of their completed disaster assistance application received from FEMA after the individual has applied for FEMA support.

Requests for game tickets from disaster victims should be delivered in person to the UI Athletics Ticket Office in Carver-Hawkeye Arena or mailed to UI Athletics Ticket Office c/o Disaster Tickets Program, Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Iowa City, Iowa 52242-1020. Requests for tickets can also be FAXed to the UI Athletics Ticket Office by dialing (319) 335-9726.

Each request for game tickets must include a copy of the official FEMA disaster assistance application with all information blacked out other than the recipient’s name, mailing address and telephone number. The person making the request should indicate on the back of the copy of their completed disaster assistance application their preference of the football game they want to attend (“Maine” or “Florida International”).

UI Director of Athletics

If a disaster victim has questions or desires more than the two (2) complimentary game tickets they should contact the UI Athletics Ticket Office at 1-800 IA-HAWKS and ask for information about discount-priced tickets available exclusively for victims of the record-setting natural disasters that struck Iowa this spring.

COMMUNITY HEROES TICKET PROGRAM

A pair of game tickets to either the Iowa vs. Maine (Aug. 30) or the Iowa vs. Florida International (Sept. 6) college football game to be played at historic Kinnick Stadium will be provided to individuals nominated by their peers as “Community Heroes.”

The official nomination form is available online at hawkeyesports.com, KCRG.com, GazetteOnline.com, and at the following locations: The Gazette, KCRG-TV, the UI Athletics Ticket Office, the UI Sports Marketing Office, the UI Athletics Hall of Fame, and the Official Iowa Hawk Shop locations in Old Capital Mall in Iowa City and on U.S. Highway 6 in Coralville.

The individual submitting the nomination has the opportunity to define what a “community hero” means to them. For example, Iowans can nominate their neighbor for helping move furniture to another level of a house, a local volunteer who helped fill sand bags, or a member of a local police force or fire department. Iowans should nominate anyone they believe performed heroically at a time when Iowa needed “community heroes.”

“We are optimistic that Iowans will seize the opportunity to thank their friends and neighbors for not hesitating to provide assistance. They truly were heroes,” said Chuck Schroeder, general manager of Hawkeye Sports Properties, who noted that there is no limit on the number of “heroes” one person can nominate.

“If you know of 100, please consider nominating all 100. No individual’s contribution was too small to go unrecognized,” Schroeder said.

” As eastern Iowa and Iowa continues to recover, rebuild, and redevelop from the devastating summer floods of 2008, a Saturday afternoon at Kinnick stadium for our flood victims and heroes is one way these folks can enjoy life again. Iowans have shown the world their work ethic and resiliency in the face of adversity, and that spirit will continue to help all of us persevere,” said Dave Storey, publisher of The Gazette.

Persons nominated will be contacted by the UI for confirmation of their interest in game tickets. Additional tickets beyond the two complimentary tickets will be available for purchase at discount prices available exclusively to persons nominated to be a “Community Hero.”

A limited number of complimentary game tickets are available for these two programs. The UI will fill requests from disaster victims and nominations for “Community Heroes” on a first-come, first-served basis.

The UI Athletics Department will publish an alphabetical listing of all “Community Heroes” on hawkeyesports.com, the official world wide web site of the Iowa Hawkeyes, on Sunday, Sept. 7.
