Big Ten Network Showcases Hawkeyes

July 31, 2008

The University of Iowa field hockey and volleyball teams will both appear on the Big Ten Network this fall. Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum’s field hockey squad will be televised three times while first-year Head Coach Sharon Dingman’s volleyball team will be on once.

After winning its second straight Big Ten Tournament championship and reaching the NCAA Tournament for the 19th time in program history, the Big Ten Network will televise at least three regular season Hawkeye contests during the upcoming season. Iowa will take center stage, as the network is broadcasting six field hockey matches this year, and the Hawkeyes can be seen in half of them. The Iowa field hockey team will appear on the network more than any other conference school.

The first two of the three key matchups shown for the Hawkeyes will be Friday, Oct. 10 at Penn State (same day delay at 5 p.m. CT) and at Michigan State Saturday, Oct. 25 (same day delay at 4 p.m. CT).

In addition, Iowa’s match against Michigan will be shown live from Grant Field at 2 p.m. Sunday Nov. 2.

Iowa defeated Penn State, 2-1 in overtime last season. Iowa lost to Michigan State during the regular season, 1-0, but went on to defeat the Spartans 3-2 in overtime of the Big Ten Tournament semifinals. The Hawkeyes secured their second straight Big Ten Tournament championship by defeating top-seeded Michigan 4-1 in the tournament’s championship game.

The Hawkeyes finished third in regular season conference play last season, ahead of Penn State and behind Michigan and Michigan State.

The Hawkeye volleyball team will take on Minnesota in a mid-week matchup Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. The match will be broadcast live from Minneapolis.
